Why Most Students Fail to Crack IIT JEE
Every year, more than 10 lakh students register for the IIT JEE exam. But only a few thousand make it to the IITs.
So, what happens to the rest?
They start with dreams, but somewhere along the way — the dream fades
In this blog, I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. I’ll tell you the raw truth — the mistakes that most students make and how you can avoid them if you’re serious about cracking JEE.
1. They Have a Dream, But No Plan
“A dream without a plan is just a wish.”
Most students start preparing just because someone told them “You’re smart, go for IIT.” But they don’t make a solid plan. They don't divide the syllabus. They don’t make realistic daily goals. Soon, they feel overwhelmed.
👉 Solution: Break your syllabus into monthly goals, weekly targets, and daily to-do lists. Track your progress. Be clear about why you want IIT and how you’ll reach it.
2. They Get Trapped by Distractions
Let’s be honest. Mobile phones, social media, and YouTube are the biggest enemies of JEE aspirants today. A quick “5-minute scroll” turns into hours. Even “study with me” or “topper vlog” videos become rabbit holes.
👉 Solution: Use your phone only during breaks. Try apps like Forest or Focus To-Do. Or simply keep your phone in another room when you study.
3. Inconsistent Effort
Many students study hard for a few days, then lose motivation. Some study 10 hours one day and just 1 hour the next day.
IIT JEE is not about how many hours you study in one day. It’s about how consistent you are for 1–2 years.
👉 Solution: Even if you study 5–6 hours a day, do it daily. Make studying a habit, not a task.
4. Skipping NCERT and Basics
Some students rush to solve advanced coaching material, ignoring the basics. Especially in Chemistry, skipping NCERT is a huge mistake.
👉 Solution: Start with NCERT. Learn the basics so well that even tough questions seem logical.
5. Passive Learning — Just Watching, Not Doing
Watching videos all day is not the same as studying. Understanding theory is just 20% — 80% is practice.
👉 Solution: For every 1 hour of theory, solve 2 hours of problems. Make your hand and brain work, not just your eyes.
6. Fear of Failure and Comparison
“I’m not as smart as others.” “I failed this test — maybe IIT isn’t for me.”
Most students destroy their own confidence by comparing themselves. One low score and they give up.
👉 Solution: Stop comparing. Focus on your improvement. A bad test doesn’t define your journey — it’s part of the process.
7. Zero Revision Strategy
Reading a chapter once is not enough. Most students forget what they studied a month ago — and that’s where they lose marks.
👉 Solution: Make revision part of your weekly plan. Revisit old chapters regularly. Make quick revision notes or flashcards.
8. No Analysis After Tests
Many give mock tests just for the sake of it. They never analyze their mistakes, never understand their weak points.
👉 Solution: After every test:
- Check accuracy
- Understand silly mistakes
- Make a mistake diary
One test analyzed deeply is worth five tests given blindly.
Real Talk: I Was One of Them…
I was also one of those students who started IIT prep with dreams in my eyes. I bought all the books, followed toppers on YouTube, joined a good coaching — but I still failed to crack it.
Why?
Because I didn’t follow the right strategy. I fell into all the traps mentioned above.
Don’t repeat my mistakes.
Quick Self-Check: Are You Making These Mistakes?
- [ ] No daily plan
- [ ] Getting distracted by mobile
- [ ] Studying only when you feel like it
- [ ] Ignoring NCERT and fundamentals
- [ ] Watching videos but not solving questions
- [ ] Feeling discouraged after low marks
- [ ] No proper revision cycle
- [ ] Giving tests without analysis
If you checked even 3 or more — it’s time to change.
Final Words: Be in the Top 1% Who Actually Do It
IIT JEE isn’t impossible. But it’s not easy either. It’s a battle of discipline, consistency, and mindset.
Most students fail not because they’re not smart — but because they don’t follow the right approach.
So don’t just be a dreamer. Be a doer.
Avoid these mistakes, and you might just be holding that IIT admission letter next year.
